Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer by becosmetic

Facial fat transfer, Microlipoinjection or autologous(from your own body) fat transfer, is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure in which an individual's own body fat is harvested from suitable areas such as from inner knees, outer thighs, flanks, buttocks, or abdomen and injected it to plump up sunken or hollow areas of the face or to add volume where needed. It is a good option for those adults who would like to diminish or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, creases in the forehead or frown lines, smile lines , marionette lines, crow’s-feet, hollows under the eyes, or ‘sunken' cheeks. It may also be used for lip augmentation. Fat injection can also plump up or improve the contour around the nose, the area between the upper lip and the nose and also the jawline. fat transfer can correct acne scars and enhance volume on the face or neck where fat has been lost.

The Process:
The autologous fat transfer to face performed under local anaesthetic and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete. It is a three-step process:

• Extraction of fat with gentle liposuction
• Isolation and cleansing of the fat cells
• Re-injection of fat cells into the targeted facial areas

Extraction of fat with gentle liposuction:
Firstly the surgeon will create a small incision in the desired donor area for fat removal then insert a cannula joint with a syringe to carefully extract the fat (liposuction).Isolation and cleansing of fat cells: Once enough fat is obtained from the desired area, the surgeon will process it to prepare the fat cells to transfer it in a small syringes that will be used as fat injection. In a centrifuge filtration process is done to remove impurities from fat cells.

Re-injection of fat cells into the targeted facial areas:
The surgeon will insert a needle or cannula into the incision point of the site which is being augmented. The injection needle is usually passed multiple times in and out of the augmented area. Thus a line of fatty tissue bundle is carefully deposited in planes of natural tissue. This procedure is repeated until the desired correction has been achieved. The surgeon may also use a dressing or bandage over the grafted area for safety.

The Outcome:
Autologous fat injection uses the fat from your own body, means replaces “same with same”, which reduces the chance of allergic reactions to foreign substances as compared to dermal fillers. It gives your face a fuller, softer, healthier, more youthful, natural, refreshed and rejuvenated appearance without any scarring. You will notice the results immediately and the effect can last from several months to two years or more. In some cases, the effects last indefinitely depending on the surgeon’s skills. When it is done successfully, the injected fat cells create a new blood supply from your body and get the nourishment it needs for survival.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is fat transfer/Microlipoinjection/Autologous Fat Transfer (AFT)?

Fat transfer is the method of removing fat from one or more areas of the body and transferring to another area, where enhancement is required. There are different terms are used to describe this process such as Microlipoinjection, fat grafting and Autologous Fat transfer.

2) What areas of the body can be treated with Fat transfer?

The fat can be transferred to the desired areas – usually the buttocks, breasts and face.

3) Which area of the body can be used as a fat donor?

Most areas can be used as a fat donor - these commonly include abdomen, flanks, knees, thighs and back.

4) What happens at the consultation for fat transfer?

You will have the opportunity to discuss the procedure with the Surgeon including risks, side effects, aftercare, expectations, as well as alternative options. After examination and, if deemed suitable, you will be given a treatment plan with pricing.

This varies from patient to patient, but is usually 1-3 hours.

Recovery time is between 1-4 weeks, depending on how many areas were treated and the size of the procedure. Here, we are referring to the time before exercise, and normal activities, can be resumed. This will all be discussed at the consultation stage for more clarity.
